Building Safer, Greener Schools

The Ministry of General Education and Instruction (MoGEI), in collaboration with Save the Children, is conducting a five-day Training of Trainers (ToT) for 60 education leaders to strengthen the implementation of the Green School Safety Guidelines (GSSG) in South Sudan. The training that commenced on Monday 22 July in Juba includes Directors General of Education, education supervisors, school inspectors, and County Education Department (CED) staff from the six states supported under the project, Building Climate Resilience of Children and Communities through Education (BRACE).

The trained master trainers will play a crucial role in cascading knowledge and skills to school inspectors, head teachers, teachers, School Management Committees (SMCs), Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs), learners, and local communities. This approach will ensure that school safety and environmental sustainability practices are embedded at all levels of the education system.

Many schools across South Sudan continue to face significant challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, flooding, extreme heat, and limited access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities. In addition, county and state education officials have often lacked the tools and guidance needed to support schools in creating safe, healthy, and environmentally sustainable learning environments.

Through the support of Global Climate Fund and GPE, MoGEI together with Save the Children organized this intensive five-day master trainers’ workshop on the Green School Safety Guidelines. The training is equipping 60 county and state education leaders with practical knowledge and skills in disaster risk reduction, school WASH, climate adaptation, environmental sustainability, and school safety planning.

Recognizing the growing impact of climate and disaster risks on education, the Government of South Sudan, through MoGEI and in partnership with national and international stakeholders, developed the Green School Safety Guidelines. These guidelines provide a comprehensive framework for strengthening school resilience by integrating climate adaptation, disaster preparedness, environmental sustainability, and safe learning practices into school management and teaching processes.

The Training of Trainers marks a critical step towards institutionalizing climate-resilient education in South Sudan. By building a sustainable pool of national experts, the initiative will promote safer, greener, and more resilient schools capable of withstanding climate and disaster-related challenges while ensuring the continuity of quality education for all learners.

Through strengthened collaboration among government institutions, communities, development partners, and schools, the BRACE programme will contribute to building an inclusive, climate-resilient, and environmentally sustainable education system that is better prepared to respond to future shocks and emergencies. BRACE is a three-year multi-country initiative to strengthen resilience of education sector to climate shocks. In South Sudan, BRACE is being implemented in Warrap, Lakes, Jonglei, Unity, Eastern Equatoria, and Upper Nile.
