Juba, March 23, 2026 – The Ministry of General Education and Instruction has begun distributing 1.6 million textbooks to primary schools across South Sudan, a significant step toward improving access to learning materials and raising education standards nationwide.
Speaking at the launch in Rumbur,
Minister Dr. Kuyok Abol Kuyok emphasized the importance of textbooks in
achieving quality education. He noted that while 1.6 million books are being
distributed at the start of the academic year, the country requires more than
11 million to fully meet the needs of both primary and secondary schools.
UNICEF’s country representative,
Noala Skinner, highlighted the need to support both learners and teachers,
stressing that access to proper materials greatly enhances children’s ability to
reach their potential. She also underscored the importance of peace and open
schools for sustained progress.
Chinese Ambassador Ma Qiang
described the initiative as part of Phase 2 of the China-Aided Technical
Cooperation Project for Education in South Sudan. He noted that the partnership
has already delivered millions of textbooks, trained hundreds of teachers, and
supported school construction. He called education “a beacon illuminating the
path of humanity,” reaffirming China’s commitment to long-term cooperation.
The textbooks, covering English,
Mathematics, and Science from Primary Two to Primary Eight, were printed with
support from China and distributed through the Global Partnership for Education
in collaboration with UNICEF.
This nationwide effort marks a
milestone in South Sudan’s ambition to build a stronger education system and
reflects growing international cooperation in support of the country’s future.
