MOGEI Launches Seed Distribution to Schools to improve Nutrition and Learning

Juba, August 2026 – The Ministry of General Education and Instruction (MoGEI) has officially launched the distribution of assorted vegetable seeds to 49 schools across South Sudan's ten states and three Administrative Areas, marking a significant step towards improving nutrition, food security, and learning outcomes for school children.

The initiative seeks to promote school gardening as a practical and sustainable approach to enhancing learner nutrition while strengthening food security within schools. Through the distribution of assorted vegetable seeds, beneficiary schools will establish and maintain school gardens that will help supplement existing school feeding programmes and provide fresh produce for learners.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, the Director General for Basic and Secondary Education emphasized the broader educational value of school gardens.

“School gardens are not only about food. They are classrooms where children learn agriculture, nutrition, and responsibility. This programme will help keep children healthy, in school, and ready to learn,” he said.

School representatives welcomed the initiative and pledged to actively engage both teachers and pupils in planting, managing, and maintaining the gardens. In several participating schools, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has supported land preparation by providing tractors, while schools have contributed fuel using funds allocated under the programme.

MOGEI noted that the initiative aligns with the Education Sector Plan 2023-2027, which prioritizes improving the quality of education and creating conducive learning environments for all learners. The school garden programme will be implemented in partnership with development partners, local communities, and other stakeholders to ensure its sustainability and long-term impact.

By integrating agriculture, nutrition, and education, the initiative is expected to provide children with practical life skills while contributing to healthier school environments and improved learning outcomes across the country.
