I’m Now Among the Top 10 in My Class: Learning Materials Help Nyariek Stay in School

For 16-year-old Nyariek Ngueny Gai, staying in school was a daily struggle. Without basic learning materials such as exercise books and pens, keeping up with her lessons was difficult, and her academic performance suffered.

“I did not have exercise books and pens,” Nyariek recalls. “I used to stay at home to help my mother so I could get money to buy school supplies.”

The lack of essential learning materials affected her attendance and participation in class. Missing lessons and struggling to complete assignments led to poor exam results, and at times she considered dropping out of school altogether.

Nyariek, a Primary Five pupil in Unity State, returned to South Sudan with her family in December 2023 after conflict forced them to leave Sudan. Since returning home, life has remained challenging. She lives with her mother and three siblings, while her father remains in a refugee camp in Sudan. To support the family, her mother sells tea in the local market, earning just enough to cover basic household needs.

Despite these hardships, Nyariek remained determined to continue her education.

A turning point came when she received learning materials through the ECHO Project, implemented by Plan International and funded by European Union Humanitarian Aid. The support was provided in October 2024 and again in March 2025. Although simple, the provision of exercise books and pens had a transformative effect on her learning journey.

With the necessary school supplies, Nyariek was able to attend school regularly, participate actively in class, and focus more on her studies. As her confidence grew, so did her academic performance.

“My results have improved. I’m now among the top 10 in my class,” she says proudly with a smile.

Teachers also observed positive changes in her engagement and commitment to learning. With fewer barriers preventing her from attending school, Nyariek became more consistent in her studies and more confident in expressing herself during lessons.

Her story demonstrates how small but targeted support can have a significant impact on a child's education. For vulnerable learners, especially those affected by displacement and economic hardship, access to basic learning materials can mean the difference between staying in school and dropping out.

Today, Nyariek is more motivated than ever. She dreams of completing both her primary and secondary education and building a better future for herself and her family.

Nyariek's journey is a powerful reminder that investing in education does not always require large interventions. Sometimes, a few exercise books and pens are enough to remove barriers, restore hope, and unlock a child's potential.

Through the support of the ECHO Project, Nyariek has not only remained in school but has also improved her attendance, participation, confidence, and academic performance. Her success story highlights the importance of ensuring that every child has the basic tools needed to learn, thrive, and pursue their dreams.
