Fourteen-year-old Abraham Tong Madit, a fourth-grade student at Awerial Complex Primary School, has endured numerous hardships. As a child with a disability, learning in the dilapidated classrooms was particularly challenging. The leaking roof made studying nearly impossible during the rainy season. Furthermore, large cracks in the walls presented fear of collapse during the rains, sending children rushing from the classrooms, often leaving Abraham behind struggling to escape. Classes also lacked ramps, making access for children with disabilities difficult.
However, thanks to the South Sudan Ministry of General Education and Instructions, GPE, Save the Children, and HelpEducation South Sudan (HESS), Abraham's school has been re-constructed. A new four-classroom disability friendly building, a climate resilient latrine, and a fence have been constructed. These improvements have made learning more comfortable and created a safer, more secure environment for all students.
The fence's construction has also significantly impacted the students' lives. It prevents children from wandering to the nearby riverbank, especially during playtime, and stops passersby from intruding the school compound.
Abraham Tong Madit's story is an inspiration to us all. It shows that even in the face of adversity, with the right support and resources, children with disabilities can overcome challenges and achieve their dreams.
